Topic : Trains from Salcombe to London

I am trying to work out how to get a friend back to London from Salcombe on Tues 8th July - does anyone know the closest train station/most direct route with minimal changes?

Thanks

Totnes is easily the most convenient.
Though Plymouth may offer alternates.
Both are about a £35.00 cab ride from Salcombe - don't even ask about buses!
You can check times and fares, (May vary! This is the new style Rail Network courtesy of Margaret Thatcher!)with the link below.

Hello,

I always used Ivybridge if thats useful...

It's quite desolate and a bit weird, but the trains were lovely!

A couple of years ago I sailed to Salcombe with my cousin Richard so to get home I used bus and train. Bus to Kingsbridge, another to Totnes, then a stopping train to Reading slowed by one of it's engines not working, missed my connection to Maidenhead, finally train from Maidenhead to Cookham. Total journey time was over 8 hours, I normally do it by car in around half that time. Although ticket and seat were pre-booked it cost more than the petrol would have cost to drive home. Never again!

Before Beeching trains went to Kingsbridge, a Minima member once took his Nat. 12 to Kingsbride by train and sailed it down the Estuary to Salcombe! There are the remains of one of the bridges on the way to the A38.

Wasn't that the reason originally for 14' being the longest travelling dinghy with 14' as the original hounds height of MR's and Int 14's the length of a railway goods carriage.
Oh Doctor Beeching whatever did you do?

Gabby - the bus from Salcombe to Totnes via Kingsbride is reasonably quick .Adrian has used it many times and the connections are shown on the local bus stops - there is one by the little car-park just below the church .A prettier route is to take the boat to Kingsbridge and walk to the bus station there for a bus to Totnes .

I use the trains from Totnes several times every month to get back home from work in Dartmouth, and they are pretty quick and comfortable and very rarely crowded until much closer to London. Unfortunately they are also very rarely on time.... don't plan for any connections without leaving a minimum of 15 minutes to allow for delays.

.. and I meant to add that if you know when you will be travelling and are able to book ahead online you can get some serious discounts on the ticket prices. My girlfriend visited me and it cost her only about 25% of the advertised turn-up-on-the-day price.

And the buffet will serve you beer too - much better than a 4 hour drive up the A303!

Gabby i can help on Tuesday but only after I have finished in the Race Box at say 4.30pm. So earliest at the station would be 5.15pm or so.
