Topic : Advice on sailing upwind

Struggling with boat speed on a fetch in windy conditions, sailing Winder one string design and going slow, any advice would be good. Not sure what to do with kicker, centreboard and other controls. No problem with light and medium airs or sailing down wind or on a beat, just the fetch for some reason.

Sounds like you need some one to take a specific look at what you are doing. Rutland training, if it is accessible. But then you would need the specific windy conditions. What are you comparing yourself to, other Winder one strings? Were you at Chichester, yesterday, I don't recall any fetches (I presume you mean, 2 sail reachs, just a few degrees off close hauled). Is it that you are not planing and everyone else is, how does your all up weight compare, are you too heavy to plane or too light to keep the boat dead flat?

Local sailing at Brightlingsea and yes two sails up on a fetch, lots of wind. we are light only 20 stone and comparing against other Winders. Got email this morning saying dump the kicker and centreboard up.

Craig, sailing lighter than usual (about 191/2-20stone) on Sunday was raked right back, plate back, and just a hint of kicker worked. I dumped the rig back a lot more than usual for the beat and reaches and seemed to have good speed. Oh! forgot, bit of cunningham as well, in other words depowered more than usual.
