Can anyone tell me more about 3124, a Smokers Satisfaction?

It is a Hoare-built Smokers, if I recall. The Brewer boys of Parkstone owned it in the early eighties and were very quick in it. I think another notable owner was LDC's Nick Peters. That, along with the black paint job, is about all I can remember!

I did my first ever Merlin Champs sailing this boat with Nick Peters before he went to the 'DaRk Side'. It was the pre-cursor to 3356 'Peters and the Wolf' which was subsequently bought by the legendary Chris Andrews.

Don't remember much about 3124, but it did us ok and served its purpose; this was in 1984 though, and a fair bit of water will have passed under it's keel since then....

Thanks, its still going, dark blue hull/light blue deck, rejoicing in the name "Space Illusion".
Still sails quite well, too, although I think the sails it had when I got it were probably the same as you used in 1984

See you there ?

How well does she really go ???

Goes somewhat better than the helm is capable of driving her, I fancy. Slight problem of lack of Class Certificate, too. Its been lost somewhere along the way.

Not a problem in the Vintage section. 252's certificate has been lost in the mists of time and there was such a hassle getting a certificate for 111 (ask GGGGGGGG) that I have decided that life is too short and besides who would do the measuring for me this far north (Aberdeen).

Alan,
Garry is correct on this one. The De May series is relaxed about paper work. This is not to say that it doesn't matter but more about getting people intersted then encourage Class membership and then all the right paperwork sorted out. Get sailing - no excuses!
PS. Garry is usually correct on such matters!!

Alan,

Great - another Smokers! I got 3025 last year and have been well pleased. Okay, it does still seem to pay to be a wannabe Phantom sailor (at least at the back of the boat)but for an 'all round' sailing experience, they are still one of my favourites. Will you be doing the 'classic' series this year?

I am Glad to see that 3025 Riot is still surving & active. I salvaged it from the boatpark at Upper Thames 10 years ago, the boat was in a real mess, but the hull was sound. Graham Chard of Hoares put the new deck on, we did a couple of Salcombe weeks in it. i found it a very competitive boat.

One of our club members at Cookham bought it a few years back and I took her for a sail. I found her to be an excellent boat and I had forgotten how well they carry weight!!!

3124 was built in 1978 by Bob Hoare for Peter Baines at Hamble River SC.
By the time the 1980 year book was compiled she was called 'Motion Past' and was owned by M. Field of the same club.
The 1982 YB shows the owner as A.Brewer of Parkstone. Let me know if you want more.

Something I'd really like to know is what colour it was originally, also anything at all about who owned it and when. (Sad I know, but the other thing I do is vintage cars, and that sort of thing matters)
Although I'm not new to sailing, I'm returning after a long lay off (say 30 years) I need to practice a bit before any serious stuff!!

Can't help you with the original colour but here is a little more of the history of 3124 'Motion Past'.
In the 1984 year book she is shown as being owned by N Peters (referred to above), 24 London Rd, Tunbridge Wells and Bewl Valley SC.
By 1986 she was owned by E Hatton, 74 Ashenground Rd, Haywards Heath and Weir Wood SC. By then her name had been changed to ' Motion Explosion'.
The 1993 yb records the owner as I Mackie, 15 Oakfields, Alexandra Avenue, Camberley, Surrey GU15 3BY and Tamesis.
The 1995 yb shows the owner as R Mackie, 28 SalisburyClose, Moseley B13 8JX and Earlswood Lakes SC and another change of name to 'Space Illusion'.
In 1998 she was owned by Peter Thomson, 9 Church Rd, Alsager, Stoke on Trent, Staffs ST7 2HB and Bala SC.
She then went missing from the year books until 2003 to 2008 when her owner is shown as Michael Matthews, 19 Ettingley Close, Wire Hill, Redditch, Worcs B98 7UF Tel 01527 850431 and Ragley SC.

Ernie Hatton still sails at Weirwood (in 400's though)!
If I see him I will ask him what colour the hull was when he owned the boat.

Cheers

Thanks,
I always thought it unlucky to rename a boat, but I think I prefer Motion Past to Space illusion

Presumably she is now painted brown?
