Has anyone thought of training dogs to be crews? It would be an improvement on some. Mind you with crews getting heaveier and heavier a dog might be a better bet for them as well.

Section 19 of the rules states "The crew shall consist of two persons", which then leads to the dictionary definition "PERSON: a human being as distinguished from an animal or a thing".

However, nowhere does it say you cannot muzzle a crew....

Long ago (1960ish.) Robin Beauclaire (710 Sarah Jane) sailed a mid-week summer evening race at Ranelagh with his Alsation as a crew, I think he was dsq. I know next time in lightstuff and short of a crew he took his baby daughter!

Nothing is ever as clear cut as a dictionary definition, for instance and extract from Wikipedia informs us
"Although animal rights advocates approach the issue from different philosophical positions, they argue, broadly speaking, that animals should no longer be regarded as property, or used as food, clothing, research subjects, or entertainment, but should instead be regarded as legal persons and members of the moral community.[3][4]

The idea of awarding rights of some kind to animals has the support of legal scholars such as Alan Dershowitz and Laurence Tribe of Harvard Law School,[5][3] and animal law courses are now taught in 92 out of 180 law schools in the United States.[6] Steven Wise, also of Harvard Law School, argues that the first serious judicial challenges to what he calls the "legal thinghood" of animals may only be a few years away.[7]

"

So if we don't let animals crew we may have animal rights activists burning our boats.

:-)

What is the general opinion of people who take their dogs to their sailing clubs and let them foul everywhere? There is nothing worse than getting dog mess over your shoes and sailing boots. I am a dog lover, but have no love for people who do not clear up after their pooches.

Of course dogs can be a more general problem at sailing clubs if their owners just let them roam free to bark and annoy people. Too many dogs owners think of their dogs are liked by everyone. The truth is that many people find them to be a pest. Parents don't let their children make mess on the grass or go round annoying people or trying to steal food while people are eating. I think there should be a move to keep dogs under control or ban them from sailing clubs.

Some sailing clubs do ban dogs - after all, there can be lots of kids wandering around without shoes on!

I would ban both young children and dogs unless under constant and strict control and supervision, if we wanted either we would have our own!

I wish clubs would ban dogs. My partner's grandchildren aged 4 and 5 had just got out of the car at a club when a couple of boisterous dogs rushed over looking to play and they fell flat into the muddy puddles trying to get away as they weren't used to dogs and these (labradors) were bigger than the children! Luckily we knew the owners who were mortified.

The worst offenders are those who go out sailing and leave their dogs to roam the site by themselves.

people do like taking things to the extreme, eh? most dog owners are responsible adults, who wouldn't dream of letting their hounds run loose while on the water. similarly, no one likes dog eggs lying around, so what makes you think owners wouldn't want to clean up after their pets? admiteddly, there are always a few idiots who seem to draw the attention away from the vast majority "good" dog owners.

The trouble with DOG is its too often spelled backwards.

I have just seen someone leave their dog to roam free while out on the water. Why do such people have so little regard for other people? How many little presents will it leave before its owner takes responsibility for it again.

Is it a lack of brain cells or some general mental disorder which makes these owners behave so badly? You would think that allowing for the relatively advanced aged of the owner, he would have more social awareness!
