Topic : Merlins and MRXs vie for 1st place at Wembley

Race Officer Mark Heritier did a first class job capturing on film the antics of the 'fast boys' of Wembley during the blustery conditions experienced on Sunday 16th. March. The carbon fibre mast on the Merlin usually gives the edge over the MRXs in a blow and managed to keep Messrs. Salmon and Garwood just ahead of a chasing pack of 3 MRXs in the first race. In the 2nd. race it
blew even stronger and it was the leading MRX man Geoff O'Neill crewed by brother Rob in the lead for most of the race with Duncan and Ian nipping at their heels until the rudder broke on the MRX and allowed Duncan to come screaming home and get the 2nd. bullet for the day. You can check out the action on www.photobox.co.uk/album/7819230 - including a sequence of shots showing MRX "Nemesis" doing impersonation of German U-Boat.

MRX class has been trialling a carbon mast for the past year - jury is still out as to whether it will benefit class. So far indications are that
present model is not speed enhancing (not that it needs to be; MRX is fast enough) but if it makes boat more manageable in a blow then will probably be adopted eventually. Membership was polled last year about carbon mast adoption and generally considered acceptable so long as additional cost was considered reasonable.

Seems that Wembley has been having its fair share 'good blows' this winter - nice to see the Merlin fleet on the up as well. Must be one of the hottest places for competitive racing in the capital me thinks - worth checking out.

I'm glad Megan thinks it is getting windier. I thought it was just me getting more decrepit as the years go by.
