Topic : Tyre Pressure

Hi,
We own 2957 Smokers Satisfaction, just wondered if anyone can advise on the right sort of tyre pressure in the trailer tyres.
The trailer is a Sovereign, and has be totally overhauled with new hubs, bearings & wheels with 6ply tyres, however, when we tow the boat
the trailer starts to viabrate at about 55mph, the viabration decreases with more pressure in the tyres, bur we don't want to give the boat a too harder ride.
So can you please suggest the ideal tyre pressure,
Many thanks.

Since the towing speed limit is 50 why worry! Just natures way of saving your Driving Licence.

I thought it was 60?

Get wheels balanced. A bumpy ride will harm boat and trailor

Only 60mph on Mototways and some dual carriageways 50mph elsewhere which is in some opinions too fast for the weeny wheels.

For Trailers
60 on motorways and dual carrigeways
50 elsewhere
30 in built up areas
unless restricted by other speed limits.

Running with incorrect tyre pressures is an offence and can be dangerous. You don't want to damage your boat due to a blow out and miss a weekends sailing due to a few minutes check.

Sorry Guys,
We're getting slightly off subject, I am fully aware of the speed limit for towing as one of our neighbours works for Suffolk Constabulary. I was asking about tyre pressure not speed limits.
Any comments welcome.

50 psi is what i usually set mine at but look at the info on the tyre itself - should give you some info as to max tyre pressure weight etc?? If You have Fat tyres then you need necessarily to stick to 60mph??

If you go onto the towing bit of the Michelin website you send them the tyre size and weight they recommend a tyre pressure.

35-40 psi on 8 inch wheels (the same each side however). we used to have a wobble/balance issue at ~60mph. i got the local tyre shop (central tyre i think) to take the tyres off the wheels, and put them back the other way round, this did not work, so i got them to turn them 180ยบ which did the job. they could not balance them as they did not have an adapter for their machine to take the 8 inch wheels. yhey were very happy to help and all i had to do was give the lad who did it a few quid for beer (pre arranged with the bloke in charge). job done, i can now tow at speeds >70mph if i need to overtake, with no problems.

We do tow for long distances, and sometimes at high speeds. The problem with trailors is that they are used sporadically, so the weight is sitting on one point in the tyre for long periods, sometimes in sunshine, and small tyres do not seem to made as well as larger ones, plus a mm 'bump' is a greater proportion of overall dia. All that means that tyres tend to become deformed. Unless I plan to use the boat soon, I keep chocks under the axle so the weight is not on the tyres.

Hi folks, i just got new tires on the trailer and they put 60 psi in the tires. if i find the boat bounces to much the recomend 50 psi and see how i get on. think its all trial and error but so far with 60 psi it seems fine.

Would defo second Rod & Jo's observations about getting them balanced. The garage may laugh at you, or not be able to get the wheel to fir their machine but do persist. When you see the size of the weights they need to use to balance the wheel - you'll see why it pays dividends. I have had all of our new trailers done for the last ten years.

GGGGGGGGG

Absolutely true, they tend to lok as you as if you come from,- well,- Belgium for e.g.; I had it done only a couple of moths ago and had to insist, but as the man says, it is worth it.
