MERLIN ROCKET FORUM

Topic : Having fun in a merlin

To a lot of you this will mean nothing,

But yesterday I steered " hairy poppins" 3408 round the buoys for its first two races since its re birth, against all the plastic pigs of the multihull fleet from where I sail from.

This I would like to add were the first races where I have sat at the back and steered. I got an 8th place out of 12 which I know doesn't quite put me up there alongside all you boys and girls that know what you are doing, but I dont care because I totally loved sailing both races in Hairy and loved the fact that several members came up to me to comment on what a pretty boat it looks compared to the F18/dart 18 and Laser 4000's that were in the race.

So I guess you could say thats it now , 100% hooked

Most excellent!!! I am happy to agree as a new Merlin owner, (new owner, not new Merlin!) I have a pretty wooden Merlin Rocket that has had many admiring comments... Shame about my sailing...

Well done. Another golden oldie going well. They certainly draw comments and favourable comparison with their plastic companions. It's a shame that there is no magic maintenance system! It is great fun to slide past just about any modern racing machine on a close fetch when there is hardly any wind. The trouble is that when they see it happening the cheating so & so's hoist their assymetric spinnakers!

I had 252 out at the weekend and managed to put 4 out of the 5 Lasers in the fleet behind me on the water which given the ribs nailed planks (plus a leak) and probably 40+ years in age was pleasing!! Now to hole that Heron below the waterline which finishes last in every race and contrives to win on handicap.

Well done for getting her wet Tony! Now get down to Shoreham this weekend to join the rest of the local Merlins. We wonder where you've been. Racing Sun and Mon from 11.

Ross, still not a lover of that harbour, too many bad experiences standing on a hull on the 14 with a trawler bearing down on me, and the delightful fishermen on the arm asking me to "move along please !"

Maybe soon when I am brave enough again, only just back to holding the stick, plus you lot will ask questions about why is it set up like that? ? Haven't you thought about doing this ? and then you will know that I really don't knnow anything about boats so a few more weeks getting my "hairy poppins" wet and then....

Going to be doing alot of pratice at salcombe after a few lunch time drinks in the ferry around the same time as the afternoon race, but only on the windy days if thats ok

Ahhh, Tony I'm sure Will would only offer kind words of encouragement :) Hope see you about soon.

If want more gentle racing we go out Wed nights too.

WFM good to hear you have finally got her wet racing !!
Assume the name is some veiled reference to a part of your anatomy..........I'm starting to feel sick........

Looking forward to seeing you on the water at Salcombe, perhaps we could hang tyres around your gunnels for protection , after all the extra weight would be inconsequential.

Tony,
It's no fun if I taunt you and you don't respond.........

Perhaps you could do a quick race while putting the bins out ?

Dear Winking prawn , please remember that you have to spend two weeks with me soon, and within this time you will have to spent time on the water at some stage, I will be waiting for this time and I will pick this as my training time in my reinforced merlin, with the tyre fenders to create a wash near "the good ship grumpy"

Will you be sailing this year or has your other ankle given out ? Anything to do with your tyre fender that you carry around with you ?

On another matter as it has taken 2 years of talking about it are we going to see you before salcombe ?
