Topic : Get me on the water

I have a Merlin (number 1028) which has not been sailed for 12 years. I know next to nothing about getting a boat of this age and rareity on the water and would be very greatfull of any help. I am not 100% sure what needs to be done. The hull is in good condition (a varnish would be good) and I have a full set of sails, the mast is a bit of a mess and there are various riggin parts on the deck which need replaicing but I cannot find anything close in chandlerys. I am in Oxford if anyone can help or knows someone who can. I am desperate to get on the water by the summer if possible. Many thanks in advance.

Hi Robin
I am sure your entry will get lots of detailed advice so I will avoid that here. You do sound very enthusiastic - thats a good start. Your boat falls into the vintage category for which there is also considerable support and enthusiasm - I am sure that Mervyn will be in touch. On Sat. May 12 there is a vintage open event at Hunts Sailing club (go to fixtures, on main site, and follow the links to know more). First hand sight plus chat is route 1. Secondly, I think you need to be more precise about what you want help with - pick one thing at a time. Describe it and the problem and I am sure that lots of members will offer advice.
Email me direct if you wish (if I've got the link right!).

Hi Ben
Thank you very much for getting back to me so quickly and your help. Unfortunately it is not that easy to get out for a day too far away due to work and family constraints which is a shame as it would be the easiest route, although I will certainly endeavor to get to a meet as soon as poss. I am not too sure what exactly needs doing to the Rocket? I think it is mainly deck fittings which are missing and the mast rigging I am not too sure about. I guess what I am really looking for is someone who I can take the boat to who would be able tell me what is needed (and possible where to go to get the parts or work done). Frustratingly vague, sorry.
Many thanks
Robin

Whereabouts in Oxford are you? There may be some nearby members who can exchange advice for a beer one evening. And what club have you joined?

Do you know how to rig any other dinghies? I cant tell if you are saying you are completely new to sailing, or just new to Merlins?

I am in StClements on Princess Street. Any advice or help in exchange for a beer sounds very generous, throw in a BBQ and that sounds like a perfect way to spend a day. I am in the process of joining Dorchester sailing club. I am slightly embarassed to say that although I can sail I do not know how to rig any dinghies. I have been sailing a Malo 36 on the south coast for the last 10 years and the last time I sailed a Merlin was as a child. This Merlin has been in the family for 20 years and although I have not been sailing it I couldn't let it be thrown out so it is now mine, hence why I am very keen get it working again and use it. Many thanks Robin

Dorchester have a vintage open at the end of July. Do you want to use that as a great opportunity to examine other boats of a similar age...or do you want to get racing by then?

Perhaps someone will need a crew that day, and you can learn even more! Contact Mervyn Allen for a chat.

Ideally I would like to be on the water by then but if not I would certainly be a great opportunity to meet other owners and boats of a similar age. I will certainly get in touch with Mervyn Allen. Cheers.

Hi, worth checking out the Classic and Vintage Racing dinghy association too.
www.cvrda.org click on forum. Ask anything on the BOAT CHAT part. there's plenty of like minded people and boats. Also section to read on varnishing etc and sales and wanted section might put you in touch with someone who has the bit you need.
I sail at Shearwater on the Longleat estate if you fancy a pleasant day nosing around other old merlins. Our club seems to have quite a few (from nos.6, 36,507, 1008,1118,2121, and so on. Sunday may 13th should see a few on the water - come and say hallo.

Hi, me again,
I see your boat is a proctor 12. Steve in our club has 1477 which I think will be the same. He lives near westury, wilts and I think will be sailing at Shearwater on May 13.
