After a rather noisy bang and the inevitabel carbom splinters this morning, I'm now on the hunt for a chipstow mast - does anyone have one for sale?
Cheers Mark

Hi Mark,
I was really sorry to see you being towed back yesterday - it made my 'joke' about whether the boat would hold up really quite tasteless and not very funny!
Speak soon and good luck hunting for the mast - I think you will need it, spare Chipstows and rarer than genuine Rocking Horse pooooo!

I presume you will get the Chipstow repaired? If so you could buy a spare, an old alloy like the link below, or a new superspars carbon(P&B often have one in stock)which if you don't want to keep as a spare you probably could sell on pretty easily.
Also I have an interesting, ex-Warrens, carbon tipped needle spar alloy, un-rigged, which I have yet to cut 2 inches off to fit on to WAPB, So I think it should be the right height for a CT, which you are welcome to borrow until you get sorted. http://www.merlinrocket.co.uk/forum/for_sale_bits/topic.asp?topic=171&page=1&sort=3&order=1&search=

Thanks for feedback and don't worry G! Superglue wouldn't have saved this one!!
Latest delivery on a new Chipstow is currently less than a month, but Nobles want me to get it repaired so I'll have to find out if that's possible....

Tip, send Alan J some photos of the break(s), he did and insurance estimate like that for me. All the repairs come up as good as new in my opinion, having had several done, several times. Based on my experience, unless you have more than 2 breaks it is unlikely the cost will come above the new price.

Hi Mark,
If you are just looking for a quote for repair or ‘it can’t be repaired’ I would speak to Jamie Stewart. I took my mast to him Sunday afternoon and he’s just round the corner to you. Jn 3 M27, think is signed the M271.
From talking to Jamie its sounds like nearly all breaks in carbon masts can be repaired and insurance companies are not paying out for new masts. I guess your issue is putting a value on an older non-Jacko mast and getting some cash towards the new rig.
If you need Jamie’s number drop me an email, but I would speak to him sooner rather than later as he’s flat out down there building RS800’s for the new Olympic trials.

With my latest break, Jacko could repair it but not economically as a professional. I took the mast to him inside my Ford Focus. So sold it to someone who felt it could be repaired.
Can one take the repair money and buy a new one?

On my last breakage, I asked the insurance company if I could tak ethe repair estimate as cash and buy a new one. They said yes. However, when I deliberated, the extra £1,000 to buy a new one versus the £100 excess and a mast repaid as good as new, for me I couldn't the point of spending the extra money.
In my opinion, I have a Mk 1 Winder, converted to long bildge & dropped nose (Mk3) with a Chipstow mast that has had at least 7 breaks repaired over its 7 years life which seems to have a very slight speed advantage over my Mk4 (with under mast volume mod) and a not yet broken chipstow. All other kit the same!

Thanks again everyone.
I'm in touch with Jamie already - he's doing a beautiful job on my centreboard and we have already been talking masts. Also in touch with Ian Lovering who has been rebuilding carbon masts for the insurers for some time...

Glad I'm not paying insurance on a Merlin any more....

Conversely, I can see why the premiums we pay are what they are! Not that I'm really complaining as I have received more from my insurers than I've paid in premiums over the last 3 yrs & that's without snapping one of those Chipstow twiglets
