Memories come flooding ( or trickling ) back ! John had to be transported some 800 yards to the mainland where the islands one taxi awaited having been summoned by Berry Ritchie. The only implement to hand was a very large, rusty ladder which weighed, it seemed at the time, about a ton. We put the invalid on it and struggled over the rocks ; a task made all the more difficult by Johns plaintive and we thought quite unnecessary complaints about the bone sticking out of his shin. The taxi driver made quite a fuss about the blood on his back seat which somewhat aggrieved me as I had much more blood on my waterproof which was one of several put there to protect his wretched seat. We took the ladder back the following day once again wearing reefer jackets and club ties ( youv'e guessed : I have a photo of that too !!)
