Topic : Merlin Repairs

I need to carry out some minor but tricky repairs to a wooden Merlin NSMII. Can any one suggest where to obtain hard wood offcuts.

Also any advise on glues to use most welcome. I need to fix the combing around the deck so need very strong adhesion. Am reluctant to use epoxy as will make a mess. Have got some Cascamite but not sure about suitability.

Thanks

Use Epoxy for strength and durability (West or SP) and follow the instructions (available on teh web I am sure), it won't make any more mess than cascamite.

Hardwood off cuts - If you have a friendly boat builder near by, is a good option.

Epoxy kits are available most on line chandlers SP106 or West 105 are the two old faithfull standards. you can mix really small amounts really accuratly by using digital kitchen scales. tape off all surrounding areas to avoid mess. good luck Barry.

Hardwood offcuts, any local joinery business should be have some. They can also get ply cheaper if they add it to a bulk order.

Hardwood offcuts: have a look at the old wrecks in the boatyard.

Epoxy is pretty much the only choice for a good strong adhesion. When I do work on my boat, I don't worry all too much if a bit over-spills, obviously you don't want it everywhere, but little runs or blobs from where you have joined something are very easily sanded off when totally dry. Also, gives a smooth finish prior to varnish or paint. Personally I use SP360 mixed with whatever filler is required for the application. Microfibres give an incredably strong bond.

A little tip. If you have a blob or run, rather than sanding it to start with and risk rubbing away all around it, if you heat an old chisel with a heat gun or gas flame it will cut through the blob or run like a knife through butter. Then sand smooth after.
