MERLIN ROCKET FORUM

Topic : Sail no. 2246

Hi,

I recently bought MR 2246, Waribashi, on ebay. Looking for a cheap way into sailing and a boat that needed a bit of work over winter it seemed ideal. Boat needs redecking and some rerigging. I've been looking on the forum and see that people often know a lot of the history of individual boats. So could anybody tell me a bit more about 2246? The previous owner told me it's a Bob Hoare Proctor XVII built in '69. Also if anyone has links to info on redecking etc they would be much appreciated.

Cheers

Look on http://www.cvrda.org - we're all into wood and varnish and restoring, especially old Merlins. We've got to re-deck too this winter so a ply buying trip to Robbins in Bristol is a must.

Search the forum for past redecking advice, and when you get stuck, just ask again!

As I recall it was owned by Guy Gurney and was one of the quicker Mark 17's made by Bob. Pat Blake had a sister ship, Near Myth and David Potter also had one. I think the 17 was supposed to be the Proctor answer to the Superstition, but by then Tony Watts had designed the Wotnot...

2202 Magic Roundabout was the first Proctor Mk XV11 hull. It was built by Bob Hoare in 1968 for David Robinson, who quickly sold her to Gerry Burnham.
In 1969 I bought 2227 Shahdaroba from David Potter and took her to Draycote Water SC where we were joined by 2246 Waribashi after Guy Gurney sold her. Whilst at Draycote Waribishi was owned by T Marriott. I don't recall either boat winning anything but Shahdaroba did better after I sold her to Ted Wilson and she had been renamed Bustoffer Jones.
The 1973 year book shows 2246 Waribishi owned by A & S Billson, Cymlau, Garreg Wen, Borth Y-Guest, Portmadoc, Caern.
By 1983 she was at Bristol Corinthian YC and owned by D Pearce, 10 Lillington Rd, Radstock, Bath, Avon. The 1985 yb records the owner as C Harvey, Byways, Hanham Lane, Paulton, Bristol also at BCYC. No more changes are recorded.

Our local wooden boats' yard, Dolphin Quay Boatyard, Emsworth, Hampshire, tel: 01243 373234, uses a cheaper supplier of ply than Robbins. Their work is of extreemly high standard so it may perhaps be worth contacting them.

Two of their crew are retired (age!) MR sailors who were delighted to offer me advice when I bought some very reasonable offcuts of 18 mm ply and Douglas fir for repairs to my MR, they even planed the latter to the size I asked for without extra charge. On a second visit they gave me a piece of scrap 4 mm mahoganay faced ply for another small repair job and again advised the best way to tackle it.
