Topic : Winter Merlins at QMSC

I would like to thank all those that gave me encouragement to purchase a Merlin , see thread "Design Suitability". I am now the delighted owner of 3586 CT Mk3 Winder and reguarly sail at Queen Mary Saling club where the boat has caused a bit of a stir.We will have two very regular Merlins sailing plus the very high possibility of a third. Other ex Merlin sailors are already muttering!

It has been suggested that there may be support for a once monthly congregation of Merlins for Sunday hadicap racing.Visiting boats paying a day visitors ticket.

Sunday racing starts at 10:45 and consits of two back to back races, the Merlins would start in the fast handicap series and race against Tasars, Flying 15's Blazes and Phantoms.

As a newcomer to Merlins I would jump at the opportunity to pick the brains of other Merlin Sailors. If there was enough interest I could organise something and post a schedule of possible dates onto this thread.

Any interest?

The dates for the "congregation" would be selected to avoid the Chichester Snow Flake

I'm surprised at the Inlands being at QM as fellow club members report that they were so extremely unfriendly to them at a recent fastsail open they won't go there again. QM said that their members don't like open meetings and they don't want them, just ordinary handicap racing.
Shame as it's a great wok to sail in!

I am surprised. A few weeks ago I took The Merlin for a practice on a Sunday, QM were running an open meeting (RS800's) on one half, club racing in the other half and happy to let me go and poodle around. It is a big piece of water. The couple of members I met were more than friendly and showed (jealous;-)interest in my Merlin.

I'm not sure what the fast sail members expected from a big club, its just like Rutland or Hayling or Weymouth and Portland, you don't reallt 'see' members and most of the staff are hired hands, that have the capability and ability to run big events safeley and effectively (e.g. Bloody Mary )

Alan, I agree with you...we have sailed at QM a couple of times and love it...they are very professional and just let you get on with it.

I think observer is just stirring yet again, the inland will be fabulous at QM as they have been many times in the past. I have been very impressed with their helpfulness so far and have no reason to doubt that it will change.

QMSC is a large professionaly run commercial sailing centre and obviously does not have the same feel as a small cosy sailing club. It does however have the advantage of large open, safe, weed free water with consistent wind whilst others may have none with no need for members to do duties or other chores. Turn up and sail.

I am glad, Alan, that you had a friendly reception as this is my experience you would receive from the larger active fleets of Lasers, RS400's ,RS700's, which all have their own starts independent from handicap racing.

The reservoir is split in half by a break water and open meetings are always held in one half whilst the other is reserved specificaly for club racing. There are a great many large events held at QM and consequently members become acclimatised to large number of visitors which have contact with the employed staff. This shouldnt be confused with unfriendly club members.

The pupose of this thread is to establish whether Merlin sailors would consider visiting on the suggested once a month basis to sail on a great piece of water where they would receive, from me at least, a warm welcome

Any body else interested?

You can take the man out of a Merlin...

P.S. Have they levelled the slipways at QM yet? I admit my memory may not be accurate, its been so long since I was there, but they are a trifle steep, no?

I have discussed with QMSC and they are happy for Merlins to join in selected Sunday morning racing. However they will not be eligible for a position in the various winter series but happy to extract results for Merlins. If we had more than eight merlins on the water they would give us a separate start. Costs would be £15 (day ticket equivalent)or £105 for winter membership ,up to 1 April including boat storage.

I propose the following dates chosen to avoid the Chichester Snowflake series:

17 Dec
14 Jan
11 March
1 April

Perhaps people could express dates they would attend or propose others if a majority view wants alternative dates. I will be sailing almost every week end subject to water freezing over!!

Regards

Rod

Merlins are of course welcome to join the racing at Wembley - with your own start and usually more than eight boats.

I will be sailing almost every week end subject to hell freezing over!!
