Topic : Boat Refurbishment

I'm looking for someone to do a reasonable job of redecking my boat, dont think my carpentry is up to it.
As its an old boat I dont want to spend a fortune and I will be doing the repaiint/varnish work.
I know people like Chipstow and Smart do excellent jobs but costs could be out of reach.
Any recommendations gratefully accepted

i sail at tewkesbury, i owned a merlin up until a couple of months ago, im thinking of buying a merlin again just as a bit of a winter project. I think im going to wait to find an old Smokers satisfaction that needs some work.

I sail on a small lake near Wokingham, I've just bought a Satisfaction to return to the Merlins after a break sailing my Chipstow Alb, which has a two string fully raking system and a hoop, which I had fitted out just like a Merlin of the time.

Thats very interesting Rob, i had some diagrams from miles about a two string raking rig system for my Albacore, i'm just about to give it some major rigging surgery (Over the Winter) Mif you can call it that, and i fancy a merlin for fun really, i loved my old boat, but i have to be honest i could never get anywhere near the albs in it. ( i still cant now in my alb!!) I'm selling a miracle i have owned for years to hopefully free up some space and money tto buy a merlin.

Rob

A couple of years ago I refurbished 2623 'Chuft' which is a sister ship to yours. She is now owned by Terry Curtis who sails at Upper Thames where you could go and a 'look see'

In summary - outside we stripped back to bare wood and fibregalssed teh areas needing support (bearing in mind the 15.5 stone that would be crashing around in the back!!) Inside we built a space frame from a combination of aluminium and carbon tubes and deck stepped the rig. The decks were fragile and not in brilliant nick so we 'boxed' in from the carlin down tothe top plank to make the structure stronger and then wrapped all the side decks in carbon. Many hours work summarised quickly - the 'we' was Jim Hopton, Dirtyhands and myself.
Judging from the recent Upper Thames open result she still has a fair turn of speed!!
