How do remove the stain on the gunwale where it has gone black. Is there some acid that will bleach it back. I've tried sanding but it seems too deeply engrained. |
Oxalic acid might work OK - not sure about sycamore. Have a post on the CVRDA website - they might be able to point you in the right direction. http://www.cvrda.org/ |
Thats what i always used, seemed to work ok after a couple of applications. Won't get the stain right out but near enough. |
Sadly, sycamore is a real b----- for staining black from water ingress. I know it's not much use now, but I've heard maple is supposed to be less susceptible (if anyone's contemplating replacing sycamore gunnels in future)........ In my experience oxcalic acid is only of limited effect. OK for removing slight watermarks, but a waste of money on really evil stains. |
Just paint it all white and get out on the water. |
Bleach? |
bleach is good, but will leave the white sycamore a bit yellow. mind you, sycamore is really an interior timber, and doesn't stay whit for long in any case. woodworking bleach is better than domestic. |
Ash - yes, see link http://www.littlejoesolutions.co.uk/merlin/prepainting.gif |
Oxalic acid is what you need , it normally come as a crystal and you mix with water. See your friendly chemist. |
Get some lysergic acid, then it can be whatever colour you want and it will probably change colour too. |
