John Stokes rang me yesterday to give me the sad news that Tony Murray died last week. Tony was Class Chairman when I first sailed Merlins - in fact he was class secretary in 1959/60 and chairman in 63. John tells me he was also sailing secretary at Ranelagh for the first big Tideway Race - sad that he didn't make it to see the next one this June. His funeral is at Kingston Crematorium on Thusday 16th March at 11.40.

Not a close friend but a good fellow to know.

Very kind to class newcomers in the early 60's.

Yes, Tony was kind to newcomers - a Merlin tradition we try to keep up. Perhaps Mr A Geek will return to a warm welcome one day?

Mr Geek could surely be persuaded to step into a borrowed boat for the champs - what with this year being our anniversary and all? He would feel at home with the right boat in the Vintage races...

Nice idea, I've even got a name for the Boat "Prodigal" but I'm too large these days, my knees are knackered (one just been replaced) hanging out on toe straps rather than a gentle lean, contra indicated, I'd need a 7 stone crew to be competative @ 22 stones, also my keelboat commitments are too much to allow practice, and I'd only do it in a competative yottette and Herr Winders order book is too full! WE do have a plan to get to Tenby in our newly acquired motor yacht ("Chaperone") (Built in Wales.) On its delivery trip to Sacandinavia.

Rubbish! We can find you a nice looking boat around sail no 1900, and line you up with a crew who loves hiking, leaving you to perch like a Hampton wannabe.

Think we are drifting from the point of this thread a little. Announcements of a sad departure from the fleet are not to be over written by talk of Motor cruisers and jallopies. Maybe a get the Geek back on the water thread?

Yes, my apologies for deviating. If anyone has any stories or pictures of Tony, let me know.
