Topic : Aluminium Tiller - not extension!

I got an old rudder stock and tiller recently - not sure what type of rudder stock - but both are aluminium. The tiller is a channel-like aluminium section 50x25mm with rounded corners and tapered towards the tiller extension. It slides onto the rudder stock - obviously a custom fit. HOWEVER it is cracked and wonder where it might be possible to get a similar aluminium section to replace it. Can anyone help?

Sounds as thoug you have a IYE Tiller and stock, they were usually black with white tipped tiller.

Not sure if rhey are still made today.

The IYE traveller systems are still available but I'm fairly sure the rudder stock etc is no longer available.
A company called Pro Boat distribute the IYE Travellers. They may know more.

Thanks for the help but on follow-up phone call apparently this was an exclusive IYE design and was stopped some years ago. Welding seems the best idea.

Garry - I will delve into the depths of the shed tonight as memory tells me that such an IYE tiller lurks in there. If it is there you can have it - I will report back ASAP

Ooh, if anyone feels like helping me I've got this bit missing from my boat - the mast, which I think ought to be carbon. Will happily collect if someone offers me a free one...

i've got an old iye, and i converted it with an up/down haul, but even so i'm not impressed with the overall design of the stock. it may have been good when new, but now it's a pain awaiting replacement. the old foil is another matter-excellent

Best thing to do with old black n white IYE rudder stocks is to use them as garden ornaments. Didn't work when they were new, don't work now, and won't work in the future. Oh and if anyone disagrees, I've got 20 years insurance claims data that says I'm right.
So there.
(Rant over......)

Further to my earlier posting I have now battled through the shed contents and have located IYE tiller plus extension plus Rowsell Bros fixed rudder blade with IYE fitting to attach tiller - must be 25+ years old and its yours if you want it

I agree, having suffered them on Larks, best place for an IYE stock is bottom of the Lake!

Yep and it's an IYE which, as has already been suggested are s***e. Shame!

Garry, Can't you use a bit of carbon pole offcut? Are you down in the Midlands in the near future, I might be able to sort you out with something.

Ah, and it's just what you need, sorry boys, I should read the thread more carefully before spouting!

Garry, when my IYE tiller went to the bottom of the Moray Firth last year, the local yard welded a piece of box section aluminium straight on to the stock. This cost pennies, works fine on a lifting rudder, and is lighter than its predecessor.

If you have problems with your catamaran rudders, or of other boat rudder until about 20 feet, you can write me a mail. Having had several catamarans (hobie 16; Tornado etc...), we are looking for the best and simple system able to resist against obstacles, ground or waves. We think that aluminium is not the best material, but carbon/kevlar fibers to get it light and strong.

These rudders were often used on boats where the stock goes through a transom slot onto the rudder and welding them isn't a good idea - I had a Lark where the only way to remove the rudder stock was to unscrew the pintles from the boat!

IYE rudder stocks were introduced 35 years ago by IYE and marketed in the UK by my company. They were a vast improvement on what was then available then. I sold them to Rowsell Bros and to many other reputable boatbuilders. Who remembers Holts aero chocolate aluminium cast rudder pintles and gudgeons that they replaced. Of course, with modern materials rudder systems have improved vastly.
One bit of yachting equipment that has not been improved on is the Elvstrom bailer, designed by Ken Pearce at IYE, marketed by Elvstrom and sold by Barry Dunning & Partner throughout the UK.

Barry, I really liked our IYE tiller on 2988, which we used with the matching section screwed to the top of fixed rudder; was light & stiff, and never gave any trouble at all until it sank. I'd use another one tomorrow if there are any more out there.
