Topic : Trip to Scotland - Easter 2006

Hamish and Calum have worked really hard to sort out this 'little holiday' for us - take a look at their blurb at the link below. I am very gutted that I cannot make it!

You can sign up to show that you are committed to going (though you need not pay in advance). Please let me know if there are any problems with this feature, as I haven't been able to devote my usual effort into this (remember my new years resolution?).

So, who is planning to camp then? A tent up there in March might not be quite as nice as at Upper Thames in June...

Mags,
On behalf of Calum and myself I would like to thank you for your support in setting up the website and for everything else that you have done. Without your support It would have been almost impossible to carry this off. It is such a shame that you cannot make it, perhaps the next one??

World champions is it? We will have to see about that. Do we have to race of scratch or can I have a headstart?

I Would like to lead the praise and thank Calum, Hamish and all the others that have worked their wonders to make this event a reality,

In anticipation of this event, I have had my crew in training in Scotland for the last four years. He's now a proper Wegie outwith his English heritage.

We will be there looking to gain the crown for the Buchanan Clan.

Green Team.

Steve - were you not aware that at Wormit last year young Tobi was pressed with the help of strong drink to become a mole in the English camp. Any dropping of spinnaker poles, luffing of jibs or failure to hike properly should be regarded as proof positive of his true and new-found allegiance!!! Look forward to meeting you at Delgaty Bay at Easter.

By: Garry R
Yeah, I knew he had gone on a reconnaisance.
As for the drink, I now realise that I misheard him when he said vomit.
As for the English mole, I suspect we will be flying under the Scottish flag on this occasion as he has done for the universities.

Dalgety Bay can offer you a wider expanse of Water than the Thames, as requested by Mags, and we promise to clear the course of Whales.....

So if this is being classed as the 'World Champs' will it be added to the masters series as a qualifying event.
ie
Silver Tiller
Inlands
Nationals
Worlds
With all four to count, Se you there guys, or are you afraid of a bit of Scottish water!!!

Scottish water is nothing to be afraid of, a splash is lovely with a single malt!

I spent some time doing a student placement at Rosyth Naval base. Its a beautiful spot and worth a trip.

You should not regard Scotland as a cold place at all. The news this morning reported that London had its coldest night for nine (yes NINE) years last night - a staggering -2.5 degrees celsius. Would you like us to send blankets and food parcels as we had a similar temperature and are not now needing ours!!

Posted: 25/01/2006 10:10:16
By: Garry R
Well last night it was 30degree Celcius here!

Looking at the list I see 6 Scottish boats have signed up but only 4 Southerners. Passports are not required for this event, border controls were taken down years ago.
Come on Chaps lets see some more commitment to the First? 60th Merlin Bash of 2006.
Ceiliedh band are now confirmed for the social on staurday night so bring your dancing shoes

Mags,
any chance of getting the news item link back up. I have a couple articles in various magazines for march issues and would like to think they will generate more publicity and numbers.
cheers

We're getting serious about hauling up from Wiltshire. Will the Vintage handicaps be used? Pleez, pretty pleeeez???

Posted: 30/01/2006 22:10:16
By: Half Cut
AS the last Scottish Merlin get togethers have been run on handicap due to the diversity of aged boats I think that the plan is to have a concurrent handicap event. Hamish will confirm that no doubt. Come along anyhow it should be great fun.

Posted: 31/01/2006 08:38:46
By: Garry R
The intention was to run both scratch racing in line with the Class rules but also to extrapolate the handicap results as well. It might be that the same boat wins both but to encourage as many as possible to attend I thought running handicap would be fair. After all its a holiday as well as an event.

By: Hamish 3321
Age related handicaps will be used. I feel about 150 today so my handicap will be me. Handicaps as per recomended Merlin Association.

I was wondering if anybody had a boat they would be willing to lend to an ex Scottish Enterprise Champion ( who now sails a Musto Skiff/ RS400/Solo) for the Easter event. Anybody who would be interested please get in touch with me and I will pass on details ect.
thanks

Just a shamless attempt to get this thread back to the top of the pile and also to ask people to committ early to the event.
I need to know how many Haggis traps to set and wether or not to develop my dive plan to the wreck of MV Cabinet Minsiter.
For those of you who have missed the sign on link on the Scottish trip page of the web site - Its at the bottom of the article

We're planning to make the trip all the way up from Wiltshire as long as we can sort the woodwork out first as the wet has penetrated and discoloured the deck.
As to English or Scottish it depends on the criteria - the boat and I are English but the helm is a Scottish exile so it's a good excuse to visit his family!

I am married, but she knows my love of sailing, and i know her love of Edinburgh just a short bus ride away!!!

Better put her on the train, its quicker and less hassel. And it drops her right in the heart of edinburgh ( opposite Jenners) just make sure that you have the credit cards!!

Still only ten boats signed up so far :@(

It being Spring and Spring having (where i am anyway!) Sprung the grass is definitely rising I thought I'd offer the concept of a stop over for those travelling from the South via the M6 in the Lake District.
Sadly I shall be in Palma yottin' and then I remembered Wordsworth and his lakeland poetry!
Wordsworth
I wandered, lonely as a dog
That roams o'er heathland, moor and bog
When all at once I chanced to spy
A cloak-ed figure passing by
His left hand clutched a copy book
From time-to-time he glanced a look
And in his right, a pen or quill
He halted, mused and stood there -- still !
His eyes betrayed a wistful air
He looked through me -- I was not there
Said he " Please help me sir --- please, if you will"
"How many f's in daffodil" ?

Posted: 17/02/2006 11:02:26
By: Ancient Geek
At Easter in Scotland there will be no f'in daffodils

By: Come to Scotland one and all
Not even on the West Coast at Mull? or Inverue?

Posted: 17/02/2006 13:44:21
By: Ancient Geek
At Inverewe there is an almost tropical subclimate so I suppose the daffs would be over by Easter!!

Posted: 17/02/2006 14:17:14
By: Garry R
Well here in Muscat the Daffs are out! They really are; in refrigerated beds! Just toppin' up the tan before yotting! I love Scotland in the Autumn but I'm not sorry not to be on the East Coast at Easter, though I do hope you have unseasonably good weather!

Posted: 19/02/2006 08:40:18
By: Ancient Geek
The City of Dundee has the highest spend on daffies in Scotland. There everywhere around the city - every road verge is covered in them and given that the weather has been great over the last few days I expect to see the little blighters poping up soon.
Its good to know that the council tax is being invested in long term value add activites rather than being frittered away on things like schools / hospitals and sailing clubs.

talking of sailing there is still only ten boats signed up - any reason why the numbers are so low???

This event has to go ahead - my cheque is in the post and hope not to see it again!! Come on everyone get signed up.

If the film is to be believed (Dam Busters)then he did have a lot of trouble selling his ideas! If ever in the Lincolnshire Area go to the Woodall Spa Hotel which was the Dam Busters mess, there above one of the bars is an elderly pine tree dug out of one of the returning Lancasters Undercarriage, the Hotel is always fullly booked for the anniversary of this raid by the survivors who are never asked to pay a bill!
HOWEVER, it will be a tragedy of Shakespearean proportions of this inaugural Scottish event does not go ahead. Go on you youngsters sail the sail and walk the talk. Do it!
AG.

Come on you students - surely you've got the free time to participate? Camping isnt going to cost much, and there's nothing like a 6 hour drive in an old banger...

By: Mags
Dust off the dancing shoes, revise the Dashing White Sergeant, introduce yourselves to Gay Gordon - anyone can do this stuff if I can - it's the dancing equivalent of Painting by Numbers!! And the more alcohol taken the easier it gets - so no problem there then!!
