Topic : Salcombe Accommodation

As a Salcombe virgin can I ask some advice as to the most convenient area to stay in or around Salcombe. I will have my 11 year old crew with me, my wife and 6 year old daughter. My wife and daughter will want to swim and sunbathe and my son and I would like to be able to walk or cycle from our accomodation to the sailing club (I have worked out from previous items on the web site that ditching the car for the week is essential)

You could stay at the Marine Hotel for the week if you have about £2,300 to burn. Well worth it though views of the estuary are spectacular and nothing quite like being waited on for a whole week, plus you get free car parking (car ditched), use of gym and swimming pool and lovely grassed stretch on water front for oodles of sunbathing.

Alternatively you could contact Coast & Country Cottages or Salcombe Holiday Homes who have a wide variety of privately owned houses to let in and around Salcombe however get in there quick as they get snapped up fast that time of year.

Last resort ..... a tent!

Steve,

Salcombe can be a bit daunting for a first timer, as we were a few years ago.

My experience is self catering accomodation on Fore Street is ideal, a 2 bed flat would do you I guess. The flats in 'The Salcombe' would be very suitable although a bit pricey as there is a pool and car parking (£800+ I think). Other flats on Fore Street or very near would be fine buthave very limited balconies (£450/500 +), so daily trips out to the beach for your wife and kid.

The two agents are as above, both have web sites to search.

Be careful if going to far from Fore Street as you can find youself up a pretty steep hill.

Most families who are not sailing spend there day on the private beach on Mill Bay, which is where 99% of the fleet have there boats during the week.

Mill Bay is on the other side of the estuary, so a boat trip is required, either a ferry across, or make freind with some one with space in their motor boat. About 20% of the fleet bring a motor boat of some kind, if you can get hold of one it make the holiday better, you don't need much a 10 foot inflatable with 2 hp outboard is OK, if you have a mate with tender try to borrow it.

You can park the car at the top of the hill in the Park and Ride for free.

Campsite is quite a way away, unless cash is a big issue, I wouldn't bother camping, too far from the social.

Steve,

Like you a Salcombe virgin attending with wife and children. I spoke to both Salcombe Holidays and Coast and Country just before Christmas and both had properties near Fore Street suitable for a family of 4 available but they were going quickly.

Steve,

You need to get going on booking up fairly quickly as most of the Salcombe properties that have not been re-booked from last year become available from the beginning of January. There are two main agents you need to contact: Coast and Country, Salcombe Holiday Homes but it's also worth trying Fulfords estate agents in Kingsbridge as they aslo operate some holiday lets in Salcombe. One important thing about Fore Street is it's quite noisy until after the pubs chuck out so if you want to get an early night and you are a light sleeper it could be a problem. I remember one year also being woken up at some horrific hour when the bus bringng the survivors of the Kingsbridge night club arrived in the early hours, I think this happens at least once a week, midweek. If you don't mind a bit of a walk then the added advantage of some of the properties up the hill could include parking for your car and maybe even the trailer. There are some nice B&B's up the top of the hill if you don't mind the hike, best to call the tourist office for those. Cheers, Dave

We hired a place a few streets back from the Batson slipway, and parked 2 cars in the driveway - lovely! Essential to be able to do that when you have little kids.

Still only a 5/10 min walk into town or to the ferry.

And work out if you want a Fri-Fri or Sat-Sat let, depending on when you want to arrive/leave and if you are slow at packing!
