MERLIN ROCKET FORUM

Topic : Salcombe Secrets

Unable to be there, we look for news of what actually happened. No race report, no nothing. No better on the SYC site. For a class which prides itself on good communications, it's a massive failure.

Not sure if this is on the right wavelength butttttt......

If I'd just been away for a week sailing, possibly with the family, I reckon I'd have a couple of things higher up my list than writing a report, like maybe ironing a shirt for Monday morning and getting the dog back out of kennels.

It's always really hazardous to whinge about what people "fail to do" voluntarily if you don't do it yourself - kind of like "part of the solution or part of the problem". Thanks very much for the race results guys and I look forward to seeing photos and a report when you've got back into the swing of 9-5 living!

There is also a report (with a slight Tamesis bias!) on the following link:

Dont worry guys - it will take a day or two to collect photos from people, and get Alex to put the finishing touches on a report. John provided the race results instantly, I just need to move the file to the right location.

Ansering Jon, we're absolutely not whinging. It just seems a pity that in one of the major events of the year there is NO official information appearing, as there was, for e.g. in the Nationals, a brief daily summary. It may be that this should be SYC's job; it would just be nice if someone would do it.

At least we're interested!

Just give us a few days! Personally, my house is still in disarray, with all my kids clothes still in a bag, a mountain of washing to do, and a car covered in seagull poo that needs cleaning.

Of course, my highest priority was the release of the 6th Harry Potter book, but I've read it now, so can concentrate on the website once more...

Rod,
Its very differcult to get enough people to fill the jobs as it is anyway!

If you are coming next year I will put you down for the daily reports.

John

Has Mags car really got the "Krapped-on-factor"?

I was once given the task of daily reports. It is a major pain. Lets face it, the last thing you want to do at the end of the day is run around trying to work out what happened in the race you weren't in, then type everything up, then try and ftp files onto websites... especially when all around you are in the rubber dub dub sinking lager pops. That's why I chose not to do it all again. It's a brave man/doris who tackles that task!

10 - 20 mins max' all race results these days are on a compooooter pull a floppy or CD or even e-mail them to yourself or get the club to and Robert should be your father's brother. Especially if you are Andrew Harris. PR is all PR or die.

John, if you want me to do it from my vantage point at the back, better lend me a bloody good pair of binoculars and in addition for Salcombe ones that can see round corners.

I sympathize with some of the comments, but surely it can't be too difficult for the people who are in the signal box to note simple things like what kind of weather it was, first few places, and anything else interesting they saw.

Which John did - he posted on the forum twice during the week, letting people know who was winning. I since removed the thread as the full results were up.

I'll be looking at an online form for submitting daily reports from the nationals, so simplify the whole process (reduce need for FTP). Then any show-off with a Palm PC or a WAP mobile could send off a few words in the evening.
Though really, I doubt there will be a VAST number of people needing a report until the end?

Good, seems like no-one wants daily reports, I'll scrap my plans and do something more interesting instead.

Hayling Island SC are proposing to put results on line and have a press office available for what they see as a major event!
Having seen the social programme I doubt anyone will have time to post reports.

Having seen the social programme I doubt anyone will be capable of reading them!
