Topic : Jib halliard

Can anyone help please?

Following a load of sticking and painting I am now in the process of re-rigging my Pahntom Kipper. The boat has a Needlespar mast with Quadrant levers on the shrouds, but I'm not sure what system I should have for the halliard. The mast has what appears to be a double toothrack fitted about 1ft above the heel plug, but I canot see how it should be tensioned. Should I have something like a highfield lever, or should I have a pully system/muscle box and use the rack to hold the halliard once tensioned?

Many thanks for any help

Steve

I'm not sure but it sounds like the system I had on my ghostrider in that the jib halyard(wire) is a fixed length with a large soft eye on the inboard end, you have length ajustment on the top of the Jib>halyard.
release shroud tension pull jib halyard through the mast and hook on to the rack then tension with shrouds. it works but is not very good for tweaking.

Best thing is to use a pulley system (cascade for best results) and hook the soft eye over a hook on the end of the system. Then pull... go easy if you have a high tank. I would have expected the hook rack to be for the main halyard btw.

Hook rack could be for either halliard but I would have expected a Highfield lever screwed into the mast track to have been the original equipment. If you want to adjust it on the move a cascade is overkill, a double block with a hook on it for the halliard , triple block at foot of mast or 1 turning block and 1 either side to lead away) to take the string down each side of the centrecase to cleat on the thwart either side is enough purchase, but they all need to be ball bearing blocks

Get yourself a bit of 20mm id tubing to fit over levers to give more purchase for a short term fix. Long term you'l break them!!!!!

the toothed rack on mine does the main halliard, are you sure there isn't a muscle box on the back of the mast for the jib? the jib halliard then comes out of the mast just above and to the side of the gooseneck and down onto the mbox hook (which has disappeared into the mbox because someone repeatedly pulls the line-whats this for?)

Thanks for all the advice.

I have just checked the mast again. All three halliard exit the mast via a sheeve box at the heel. It also has a tang fitted just above the heel and below the rack, which I assume whould have had a highfield type arrangement.

I think I will be going with a pulley system, if I can work out how to fix the pulley to pull up vertically but also lead the rope along the case at low level. Any ideas?

Thanks

Steve
