Before I get the hacksaw out, can someone just reassure me that the new correct pole length is 2.3m ?!
Whats the best way to stop aluminium corroding where its cut? Smother it in epoxy?!

It won't corrode much Mags, so don't worry about it.
The length is on the RYA site under the rules. Would be a good link to add to this site...

If you scratch anodised aluminium though, the salt water attacks it - itsnt that why my old mast is riddled with whitish dust?

Don't forget that the length also includes the bits at each end!

Mags, there's a guy down here who makes aluminium launching trolleys and he doesn't use anodised aluminium. He said that it goes all dusty but isn't really affected by the salt water (no more than the plated steel anyway) The real problem is keeping the stainless away from it and stopping the chemical reaction taking place.

Mags, I had a pair of spinny poles I had made from unanodised tube, they lasted me for over 3 years with no problems, but the fittings were not up to the job. Mervyn Allen now owns them and they are gathering dust in a corner of Ranelagh's boat shed. Corrosion is not an issue but electrolysis is, potentially. I used ally pop-rivets I think. The tubing came from a shop in Tooting and cost about £18 for 2 2.25m lengths.

Really do not bother with any protection. Aluminium creates an oxidised layer very quickly. It should not corrode a great deal unless left in contact with salt water contantly. There is a white corrosion product which may be brushed wiped off but will not cause any weakness unless you get large pitting in one area.

There are different qualities of ally. We us 1 inch aero quality, it,s light stronge and as yet we have never had to clean them.
They do bend slightly on a close reach force 4 plus.

Right - forecast for Hayling looks splendid - F3 SW or so. So i've got one day to make up my new poles, and get the rope lengths right (whilst simultaneously entertaining two 2.5yr olds). Whoo! See you there for my first sail of the year.
