MERLIN ROCKET FORUM

Topic : Curious

Having flicked through the list of past champions, designers, builders etc I was wondering why Bob Hoare (as a builder) was not included in the list with 8 wins - same as Holt. I think he shared a year but that shouldn't count against him. Was he the original Bob the Builder I wonder??!!

Well spotted, I will update this page and send to Mags. Nice to know someone looks at these things after all the hours of typing them out from the class year book.

Out of interest does anyone know if the J P King who was the winning crew in 1979 a relation of Phil or was it a typo in the year book and should be Phil?

It was Patrick King from Hamble.

The same Patrick King crewed for Tim Hockin in M/R 1793 when they were second in the 1966 Championships at Weymouth. Tim subsequently became M/R chairman in 1968/69.

and the very same Patrick crewed Graham Pike in Gigolo to finish 3rd in the champs at Pwllheli in 1970.
He possibly also crewed for Graham at Whitstable in 1969. I think it was a hot dry summer and a number of fancied boats had difficulties satisfying the measurer. There was some reluctance to bring boats to the scales and ingenious ways were found to overcome the problems. Of course it couldn't happen today, could it?.
