Topic : Steppenwolf

Merlin 3542 Steppenwolf has just appeared for sale anyone got any details on design what is the ideal combined weight to sail her, would she be suited to Bala lake were I sail, is this the only one of this design and what success did she have, if any. The start of the season is drawing near at Bala and I still havent found the ideal Merlin! Must beat Miles and John Beare early on in the season as Miles is getting married and building a brand new boat!

Here's the link to the design guide. The rocker and sections are all pretty flat. Mark Candelas has been sailing the boat for a few years, after trading in a Wembley one-design NSM2. On the cicuit he has not gone any quicker in it AFAIK - you could ask at Wembley. If you are sailing fairly light on the nice open spaces of Bala it may well be pretty effective & was certainly in good nick with decent sails last time I saw it

Wasn't this Dave Fowler's Boat?

Yes & I think Dave sold it to Lesley Ross who sailed it with Tony Wakeling before selling it to Candlesticks

Steppenwolf was built by Jacko specifically for gentlemen of more robust proportions. It was built with a space frame originally, but was converted to a conventional foredeck arrangement by Jacko for Mark Candelas when he bought the boat.

Well engineered, and good value.
