MERLIN ROCKET FORUM

Topic : Calling All Scottish Rockets

Following on from last years discussion on Rockets in Scotland, I have the pleasure of inviting them all to Wormit Boat Club, on the south bank of the Tay estuary, for our open reggatta. This event will be run 4th and 5th of June and consits of a four race series (three to count). Entry fee will be around £15 and there will be a bar ect to aid recovery from a day on the water.
If any other Rocketeers fancy the trip they would be most welcome.
For further information please email me.

Might just do that. Nobody will believe this but the week before is my 50th and planning to have a bash up there. I thought there were some discussion about special events to celebrate the 60th birthday of the class. Graham ???? one of them being a Scottish event
Really think it would be great to promote Merlins as nobody seems to be playing football or rugby !!

Great idea. I'll come if I possibly can. Any chance we can sail off the class old boat handicaps?

Looks like 5 boats so far and we have yet to contact all the other rockets in Scotland. Any more from south of the border? We intend to use handicap allowances for mature boats. If you require accomodation contact me or laser 72120 early because some of the club members have spare rooms which they would give up for the weekend.

Scoot can you e mail me your contact details so we can give you updates directly.

I think it would be chirlish not to come from Ayr, when you've just had interest from to London based boats. Albeit one a proper haggis and porage Tayside type.

Halfway down Page 4 of the Forum, you'll find the previous thread about Scottish Merlins. It might be worth contacting several of those directly. There was plenty of enthusiasm for some sort of event.

I was told that the Wormit Club sails between the Tay road and rail bridges - should be an experience!

There is another old merlin in Dalbeattie(Proctor I think) I will try to contact the owner, I am not sure if its in racing condition and I know that he races a flying fifteen at Kippford.

We usually sail between the rail and road bridges, an area some 2 miles across by 2 miles wide and we can sail through the rail bridge up to Perth(20 miles) or east through the road bridge out of the river(8 miles) and on to Denmark. We have more water than you can shake a sail at. The bridges are each around 2 miles long

Scoot I will speak to you closer to the date about camping. There may be space for a small tent at the club or a spare room somewhere. Consider your name at the top of the list. Thanks for confirming.

Picking up on Calums point about the water we race on - IT's Clean, full of fish and seals and genarally free of merchant shipping ( Perth is still a working dock). The area hosted an ultra 30 gp event a few years ago and they thought it was a great venue but then what do nine old duffers on a giant moth know!!!!

Didn't there used to be a Shetland Fleet? Come to that there were several boats in Bombay (Mumbai) designed by O'Brien Kennedy. I saw one last year all that was holding it together was the coper nails and termites holding hands. A Scottish Event is a real plus what about a Reel Party? (That is Scottish Country dancing not the reeling that goes with too much Whisky!)

Just a quick note to raise awareness of the event at wormit. there is not really much more to say other than the season will kick of with an event called the Cox's Challenge shield on the 26th march and if the weather stays this good it should be a cracker. if any Scottish rockets fancy the trip we would be more than happy to let you enter free.

Hi Scoot. Only one at wormit but working on other people to buy one. We would be delighted to run racing for merlins with our club racing, all we need to do is sort out dates with other owners or perhaps go to their clubs and move it around the country. Any other thoughts, opinions and comments please let us know.

i am going to purcahse one of these rocket thingys in the near future- once the bank manager gets off my case- so that would be two at wormit. i also agree with Calum that we could do a mini travellers event/ series next year moving around the country, it might be worht having this discussion at the BBQ at Wormit on 4/5 june 2005. Scoot we will ask about at WBC to see if there are any interested parties who would like to crew for you. I would offer my own services but i have already commited to helming for Gary R in his boat. If you fancy a trip through though and havent got a crew ( pre reggata ) drop me a line. I am about the weight you were looking for although i can be a bit lippy - ask Calum.....

We should be able to find you a crew once the season starts in a couple of weeks and people crawl out of their winter sailing snooze.

Hello everybody once again. just a quick reminder of the regatta at Wormit on the 4/5th of june 2005. Calum and myself would like to start to pull together a list of rockets that are coming to the event so that we can identify any that are short of crew and atempt to fill the gaps. we have had offers of crew/helm from Glasgow uni and also another couple of people at wormit have expressed an interest. Could anybody who is keen to come please get in touch with me or calum so we can send out directions / entry forms and all the other stuff like sailing instructions ect. Also the people that make early decisions will to travel will be allocated the best accomidation. Tents on the beach are for the hardly souls especially when the tide comes in. Does anybody know of any Rockets for sale in the £1000 range?? I have sold my laser and am looking for something wide to chase Calum in!!!.

Just thought i would mention the fact that i have just purchased MR 3321 and towed her through the night back to Wormit. This leaves me a mere six weeks to workout how to make it go before the regatta. I would like to say a big thanks to all the people who helped me find the right boat and gave me advice. Nick Baker, Maggs and Calum take a bow!!. Does anybody have an info on the history of MR3321 other than the guide book info??.

Hamish you owe me a beer for making me drive through that freak blizzard in the borders. pass me the pampers. only three weeks to the first merlin class racing in scotland for years. see other thread as well (merlin rockets in scotland) and or contact me for details

isn't it funny how people just add rubbish comments to the forum to keep thier threads at the top of the pile. Its only 21 sleeps to Wormits event. Calum - i might buy you a shandy or two at the event as a thanks. I though you handled the blizzard situation quite well although the tight left hander downhill sideways was a bit worrying. three weeks doesnt leave much time to get the boat up to speed but i might get a chance to polish it - with your sails !!!!

I've been let down on accommodation for Wormit, sister refusing to change her holidays. No consideration for others, some people. Quite willing to camp, but has anyone any bright ideas?

PS 11 days to go
