Topic : Rigging advice

Looking for some advice on my uphauls and outhauls. My uphauls on previous boats have always been steel cable but they also had aluminium mast and boom. Now I have a carbon mast and boom, should I still be using steel cable or a pre-stretch polyester, or a non-prestretch. Any recommendations of type/thickness? I can get Marlow over here.

Thanks

I'd go for Dyneema 4/5mm for the pole uphauls and the outhaul. If your really keen strip the casing off the bit that doesn't pass over any of the sheeves, cleats or blocks. Keep an eye on it cause the core does not like alot of U/V but should do a season.

Good luck.

John,
Would I be correct in thinking that by uphauls, you might be meaning what in England we call halyards? If so, for the main halyard any of the Vectran/ Dyneema type ropes are excellent; don't need to be big, 4mm is plenty. For the jib halyard I would stick with stainless steel wire, 3.5mm probably. Clew outhauls etc - any good prestretched rope is good, but would probably go high strength low stretch for the part of the purchase from the clew to the first block in the tackle.

The best place for dinghy stuff including Marlow ropes on the East Coast is Annapolis Performance Sailing. They can tell you what the US equivalents of our recommendations are. They have a good website and a great mail order service.

John, have you got any more up-to-date pictures of your new boat? Keith Callaghan has not updated his site recently and the last one on it is the hull shell after coming off the frames - sounds as though you are nearly finished if you are looking for string

Thanks for the encouragement guys.

Keith is as upto date as i've kept him so its my fault he has no new photos. I did promise him some snaps a while back so I need to keep up my end.
We have the gunwhales and inwhales complete. All ribs/knees in place except the thwart and the full knee below it [this weekend I hope]. The CB case is complete. Bow tank just needs top putting on. Again, this weekend I hope. Kingpost is positioned but not epoxied. Rear bulkhead/deck support is almost ready to go in. Hope to be painting the bottom in 2 weeks! After that its decking time.
Problem with snaps is getting a decent field of view since daytime temps are between -20C and -10C right now so I don't want to open the garage doors. I'll get onto it real soon.

I got a good looking mast made up by Forte RTS in Masachussettes [never sure when to stop typing s's with that state] which looks good. The owner races International Canoes so hopefully knows what he's doing! Also bought all my blocks through him.

Looking at an April launch if the icebergs have gone from the lakes by then so starting to think about bits of string and where to put things.

I'll get those pics done, estimated weight [from picking it up and moving it around is 150lb in protestant units (about 70kg) without deck or centerboard in place. Thinking we may be at about 200lb (90kg when finished) but we'll see...

We had a heat wave...
Temperatures soared to 1 or 2 degrees above freezing so managed to get some pictures. Sent them on to Keith last weekend so hopefully he'll get them up soon.
Didn't get the bow tank sealed up yet. Decided to go ahead and turn it over so that we can finish the bottom side.
Hopefully pictures of the painted hull real soon.
