Topic : Travellers and carbon boom

Does anyone have any handy information/hints on traveller systems? We currently have one which, sort of works sometimes in the cleating department. This involves a wire between the two traveller ropes and a cleat on each side of the hoop, when you pull on the new side it is supposed to uncleat the old..I can see the logic but it ain't that trusty!

I was just wondering if this is the definitive system or if someone has found a better one??

Also, wanted 1 carbon boom, anything considered.

Cheers and happy new year.

It would appear that you have to re-string the thing every now and again to keep it working properly. Mine has packed up auto uncleating and I'm about to re-string mine hafter advice that it appears that the string shrinks a little over time.

Is that the reason? I don't know.

Try wire, or change to the system i described in the other thread.

Cheers for all the advice.

Have changed to a wire set up in the middle with another piece of wire passing through it with eyes on the end to uncleat the old side. Is working OK but think a larger rope diameter for the bit that cleats will solve the new problems discovered after going out in 20 kts at the weekend.

Also found the mast tacking through about a foot at the masthead because the shroud tensioning system was not tied in the middle. Therefore, the thing just leant over the leeward side- very interesting!

Going to take out the block which, is attached to the top of the centre purchase system, tie it there and see what happens, anyone any thoughts?

I'm also a little concerned that we are not going to get enough rake into the rig in real breese cause all the blocks max out. Admittedly I have not measured the rake yet so an unknown quantity, but the rig looks very foward with the foot back in the mast step and a large distance between the top of the hoop and the boom- dispite problem mentioned above..Oh what fun.. and has anyone else had a butchers at the long range forecast for the Bloody Mary?, crew thinks the rig is going to fall out the side of the boat. HA HA HA!

It seems to me these boats are too complicated now it does of course provide something to think about for those who can't really sail very well and need an excuse!

I do not believe that the Merlin is to complicated, I think that they are great boats. A bit of the appeal and challenge is the set up. We are new to the class and it is just nice to know that you are somewhere in the right ball park regarding the rig etc. before you even start considering sailing ability or excuses!!
