Merlin Rockets - Builders

The overall standard of professional boat building in the Merlin-Rocket Class has been very high. It compares very favourably with other classes. Consequently boats have a long serviceable life.

* Still currently building Merlins.

* ALAN JACKSON - Chipstow Boatyard
Tel: 01268 710111
Website: http://www.chipstow.co.uk
Alan still seriously races in the class and his personal commitment to giving his customers fast boats at reasonable prices shows in the popularity of his boats. Alan takes great care to build down to weight and his boats seem to go well whoever sails them suggesting a lot of potential. He is the only builder offering the West Epoxy protection which lengthens the life of a boat by saturating the planks rather than just using West as a glue.
Fairly rare on the second hand market.

* LAWRIE SMART - Smart Boats
Tel: 01444 410376 or 0976 536922
After a short absence is now building again. Only a handful of boats built, but all of very fine craftsmanship. Has a reputation for artistic licence with designer's lines which is usually to the benefit of future owners. Well worth seeking out.

* GUY and DAVID WINDER - Canal Boatyard
Tel: 01274 568187
Email: guy@winderboats.freeserve.co.uk
Soundly built boats incorporating innovative engineering. Form follows function creating a unique style of boat fit for its purpose. Small numbers built by Guy each year in late 70's and 80's. Now David is producing a new glass/carbon boat, which are proving very popular. A few are now just beginning to appear on the second hand market.

* KEVIN DRIVER - Wrecked 'em Boatyard
Tel: 01297 234434
Kevin left Rowsells to form Wrecked 'em Boatyard in 1995. A handful of beatifully crafted wooden boats built, very successful and thought after.

* KEVIN DRIVER AND LINTON JENKINS - Full Wrecked'em Force
Tel: as above or 01398 351513
Email: linton@fullforceboats.com
In 2000 Kevin teamed up with Linton to produce a new glass/carbon boat. Currently only a few made.

* ROWSELL and MORRISON
Tel: 01395 263911
Email: rowsellandmorrison@u.genie.co.uk
This partnership basically built and/or designed most of the class in the 1970's & 1980's. Their sound quality of design and construction has given the class a wonderful legacy in the shape of vast numbers of reasonably priced quality second hand boats.

JON TURNER DINGHIES
Jon learnt his trade with Rowsells in the 70's. All his boats were built on a no compromise, state of the art basis and were usually supplied fitted out by the yard. Many still doing the circuit, second hand Turner boats justifiably still carry a premium price.

GRAHAM CHARD - Bob Hoare Racing Dinghies Ltd
Bob Hoare built many boats in the 60's and 70's. Always built down to weight with emphasis on essentials, and if maintained carefully they can be good bargains. Chard took over in the late eighties. Has a following at one or two clubs but little seen elsewhere.

JASON BISHOP
Built foam sandwich NSM2's based on Jon Turner's famous Seventh Heaven. Earlier versions built by Simon Bagley appear from time to time. Quality of fitting out varies.

RON HALL
Ron built several boats in the early 90s. Usually very pretty boats, often owner fitted out. Not many on the second hand market. Worked with Nick Aubrey in developing the Holt designs.

KEITH PROBERT
A number of boats built in the 70's. A successful racing history eluded most examples built.

DEBENHAM
Beautiful boats painstakingly built to high standard on traditional lines. If bought secondhand will be sound but may need modern rig and fittings.

CHIPPENDALE
Hundreds of boats built in the 50's and 60's, mostly to Proctor's narrower designs. Simple, traditional, well-built.

ALN
Small numbers built mostly in the 70's. Notable for their immense strength of construction which meant that they were not always down to weight. They will last forever. Excellent boats for learners. Designs often by Keith Callaghan, good to windward.

ANDERSON RIGDEN & PERKINS
Small numbers built in late 60's and early 70's. Pretty and down to weight. Lightly built. Mostly to Mike Jackson designs.

WYCHE & COPPOCK
Hundreds built in the 50's and 60's. Good solid narrow boats all.

Apologies to those we have left out.
