Dorchester Vintage Open 2005 |

The day started overcast with just a slight breeze, but everything improved as 9 splendid Merlins arrived at DSC for a thoroughly enjoyable days racing. The first race was started slightly later than planned to allow a couple of latecomers to finish rigging and get on the water. The course set allowed boats the choice of passing either side of Dorchester's infamous Island, then round Buoy 8 onto a long spinnaker run/reach up to buoy 3, then a combination of buoys back down to No 1. The race developed into two separate battles with Spriteful, Warrior, Kate, and Chindit at the front and Bow Bell, Isca, Les Sables, Chippyninebee & Magician towards the rear. Chippyninebee had a gear failure on the third lap and had to retire and the race finished in the above order with Spriteful, Kate & Warrior finishing within 6 seconds of each other!  We, Jeremy, Angela and Louise & Rachel, tried to slow the leaders down with Chicken curry, poppadoms, naan and rice followed by apple pie & ice cream. It worked in the second race a pursuit based on the finishing times of the first race. In essence, the positions were reversed with Magician winning, Les Sables next then Isca. One sad moment when the mast of Spriteful with John & Lyn Gardiner sailing, came crashing down onto the foredeck. The attachment at the hounds had failed, so end of meeting for them. The third and final race turned into a battle between Mervyn Allen and Laura in Kate & Paul Seamen and Eileen Barry in Warrior. In the end Mervyn & Laura just came out ahead, and in fact the result of the last race gave the flavour for the final results of the meeting. The day finished after everyone had packed up, with a home made cream tea (Angela Louise & Rachel thanks again) and the presentation by Commodore of DSC David Gray.
