What is the Club Sailors' Championship?Jennie King explains what it's all about - Summer 2003 |
|
A bit of history - the Club Championships were first held in 1998 at Shustoke SC. It was aimed at Merlin club sailors who turned out regularly for a club race but probably didn't do much travelling. We specifically barred the hot shots from entering - no one allowed who had come in the top five at Salcombe, the nationals, the overall silver tiller or the inland champs. Scotty found some beautiful small silver plates in his loft (left over from the ex Draycote Water Merlin fleet) and these were engraved and re-presented to the winning helm and crew of the Club Championships. To qualify, it was suggested that a qualifying series of races was used at each club and the winners sent to represent their club. In reality, we now accept entries from any keen club sailors who would like to take up the challenge (as long as they the fulfil criteria re. hot shots). Shustoke and Blithfield sailing clubs have hosted this event in the past (often along side their open meeting). Entry fees are minimal and the racing usually runs informally with several short races scheduled so that everyone can get a chance of a good race. Re-named the Club Sailors Championships in 2003 to show that we are trying to attract the club sailors. Give it a go - it is usually good fun and there's sure to be a good party after!
