The Guzzlers GallonDavid Villers-Child reminisces... |

The Bognor Barrel and Adur trophy were two of the highlights of the dinghy racing calendar raced over weekend in mid-summer coinciding with a major drinking event on the Friday night called the Guzzlers Gallon! It was in simple terms a drinking competition. Rather than simply hold it on the night it was held over a period of two weeks and every time one bought a drink in a pub or bar the bar keep was required to sign the chitty so an audited record of consumption was kept. Thus Friday night was a mild rather than a heavy bacchanalia leaving one relatively capable of putting on a decent performance on the water the next day! I was determined to have a clean sweep of all the trophys that weekend. I had been doing much drinking have been taking my part two tripos! I arrived on the Friday night to the knowledge that George Slack was leading. How much to win? I asked, two bottles is that all give them to me. They were not beer they were whisky! I got them down and they stayed down for a while when fortunately up some at least came some of it. I duly got part one of the pot hunt! Going back to my hosts that night in the back of his very new smart car, I began to feel very unwell. For Gods sake not in the car said Dennis. I found a receptacle a Gladstone bag type brief case I opened the top and performed. I felt better and no one said anything, we all forgot. I went on to win the other two trophys and no-one would have ever remembered anything, except Dennis was to appear in the High Court on Monday, and when he opened his case in the court room..I leave the rest to your imagination! Dennis did not win his clients appeal! |
