I was wondering if anyone knows where I might be able to get some spares for a cee vee 8118 C lifting rudder? Kind of managed to stuff up the red plastic stop & lever and struggling to find a replacement. Have tried Pinbax but they don't seem to want to respond.

That looks glueable to me. There are some mastic type construction adhesives available which will glue hard plastic to metal. I have been using one recently called Tec 7 which seems to bond well. It might be worth a try. Alternatively take the lock out and fit a conventional rope downhaul with a cleat on the tiller. You might have to wriggle a turning block into the stock or put a sheave on a bolt but it shouldn't be difficult - It will save the stock from the bin.

I think in the past we attached a downhaul rope to the top of the rudder on the 'front' somewhere (this is the only hard bit) - then led the rope around the fixed red bar shown in the photo.  There is then usually a gap between the top of the stock and the underside of the tiller to lead it out and put a cleat on the bottom of the tiller where you can reach ... i would suggest adding a 2:1 along the tiller.

That's exactly what I have in my Cee-Vee stock.  With the downhaul cleated & the pivot bolt screwed up really tight the blade will not lift.  The original locking mechanism is very elegant but not really robust enough and it is probably 20 years old now.

Fixing a downhaul to the front of the rudder is not hard. Drill a hole in to the rudder from the front just above the leading edge where the blade fattens out - not through it from the side - and just slightly larger than the thickness of the downhaul rope. About 25-30cms deep. Make sure you drill vertically or you will come out of the side of the blade. Dip the end of the downhaul rope,in some epoxy and push it in the hole- leave to dry job done. This way you have no hole trough the blade to absorb water. I always glue my downhauls in rather than knot them. Email me if this isn't clear.

What do you do when the rope wears or breaks?

when the rope breaks you realise the error of your ways and drill a whole through the head of the blade as well as the whole previously drilled.  The rope is then knotted at this point, with the knot sitting inside the head of the blade.  It can be inspected and replaced.  No epoxy.

Haven't broken one yet,but if I did I would just drill it out carefully with a smaller drill and glue another one in. A bit like refilling teeth I guess. If you go down the big hole through the side of the blade with a knot approach, then oversize the hole, fill it with epoxy and re-drill it, otherwise water will seep in to the core of the blade and damage it,in the same way you would with a pivot bolt hole.
