I have a Winder square hoop already and the traveller is a large shackle that slides along the top of the hoop. It hangs up occasionallyand is hard to pull in a blow even with 2:1 on the traveller lines |
I mean, Square hoop, not Sqaure... |
It is important that the shock cord under the curved seat pulls / retrieves both handles back to the thwart. If it doesn’t then the added friction of the rope lying on the floor of the boat makes it very difficult to pull the traveller up. |
So, John, all you need is a ball bearing traveller and bit of track which you can bolt on to the top of your hoop, and you are away! |
Mr Infinity (three dots) |
.. and I see you are only two dots, so thats my crummy eyesight. |
It's probably easier - and certainly cheaper to fabricate a car out of tufnol/pulleys. |
The thing to watch with a hand built pulley / car is that the blocks twist on the top bar of the traveller due to the lead in line from the boom which of course changes every time you move the sheet. Having done this on our old boat (see photo) and then swapped to the standard Harken traveller on BAU, I was amazed at the difference. http://www.merlinrocket.co.uk/gallery/view_photo.asp?folder=gallery/building_and_repairs/carbon_hoop_3386&file=3386_hoop_pic6.jpg |
A lot of home made cars fail beacause they are done with stainless steel rather than tufnol. Tufnol is a low friction product intended to do exactly what is asked of it in this particular application. |
It is quite easy to fit a Harken track and car to your existing square hoop - I did so on 3489 Love on the Rocks to replace the sliding shackle arrangement. If I can do it, anyone can! |
