Topic : Watermark design

I see that a Watermark design Chipstow boat has come onto the market, 3528. Does any one have any information on this design which was a collaboration between Jackson and Holt according to the yearbook?

Thanks

Jacko is the person to ask & may well give his opinions on the forum presently. If I'm not mistaken this boat is Pass the Parrot which he sailed himself for some years with variable success. There wasn't anything wrong with the boat, though nor did it set the world alight. A similar shape to CT but IIRC straightened out a bit in the bow without the twist just before the rise of floor point. Space-framed with inside and decks painted.

I think it's mentioned in the design guide, from memory it's basically a CT but with straighter garboards. As Dr Mills said, it's neither a dog nor a total rocket ship. Jacko and Wiggy had some good results with it.

Pass The Parrot was 3529. Exactly the same design as 3528. Space frame with canvas deck. Link takes you to what I believe to be a picture of 3528. Jeepers I need to get out more and meet some people!:-)

I borrowed 3528 for Salcombe week one year - seemed pretty quick in straight lines - only slowed down by my complete inability to tack with the wretched "Laser Type" mainsheet arrangement. The owner had cut his teeth in Lasers and had no trouble tacking it - it has to be said.
We bought an early Winder sometime after this - by way of comparison I would suspect that the Watermarks were as not quite as light in the ends as a Winder, and the controls (esp. that bl**dy mainsheet) not quite so sorted as a Winder. In my opinion the controls on the Winders are a good part of the secret of their success - they just work!
All in all I reckon that the boat would be a fine club boat (subject to that mainsheet system meeting it's maker) esp. on inland waters, it was very well built and had a decent Chipstow/ P&B rig. It is less than half the cost of a Winder! You pays your money and takes your choice.
If you really want to know more about the boat talk to Jacko (check what time Tea Break is in Downham and be sure to have comfy chair and cup of tea handy).
