Topic : Rondar rudder stock

I took my Winderbox (3078) out of retirement at the weekend to take part in the Rutland Race Training weekend (which was excellent). My objective it to get me, my crew and the boat in the best condition possible for Salcombe week which we have entered, on a reasonable budget.

Unfortunately the pintel on my Rondar stock sheared off and I can't see a way of drilling the old one out. Thankfully Dave lent me a rudder and Mark gave me a tiller extension (many thanks) so that I could carry on with the weekend.

Does anybody have a Rondar stock cluttering up their garage that I could relieve them of? Or any other stock that would fit the same rudder blade and transom fittings? Happy to pay for it if reasonable.

Also, I am looking for a good set of sails for a stiff Aluminium mast.

I don't have one myself, but i beleive Fireballs and Larks use identical stocks so it might be worth a look on their websites.

Ebay is probably a good bet too.

or Aquabatten /Bainbridge on the soth coast. All the best Barry.

THINK RONDAR RUDDER STOCKS WERE CAST ALUMINIUM WITH THE HOLES FOR THE PINTALS REAMED OUT FOR AN INTERFERENCE FIT & THEN THE STOCK HEATED TO ACCEPT THE S/S PINS WHICH WERE ALSO LOCKTITED IN PLACE (RED STUD LOCK). THE LOCKTITE DOUBLED AS AN INSULATOR BETWEEN THE ALUMINIUM & S/S.

SOLUTION IS TO CAREFULLY HEAT STOCK TO BOTH EXPAND THE ALUMINIUM & SOFTEN THE LOCK TITE (USE PROPANE) & THEN REPLACE PINTAL IN SAME MANNER. CANT RECALL EXACTLY THE CONSTRUCTION BUT YOU MAY ALSO HAVE TO DRILL AN ACCESS HOLE TO ENABLE THE STUB OF THE BROKEN PINTAL TO BE DRIVEN OUT.

GOOD LUCK!

Definately a good tip, but unfortunately there also appears to be a stainless steel retaining pin driven in from the side preventing it from moving. Almost impossible to drill out from the side without a bench drill and I am afraid to drill out from the bottom in fear of further damaging the hole which has to receive the new pintel.

Sailing is full of mini engineering projects is it not?

Try Keith Bond - I'm sure there were a couple of new ones in stock a a short while ago.

If you can get the broken part of the pin out - drill the hole over size (12mm using bench drill) and then bush it with a carbon bush (from Winder Boats if no where else) - then change the fitting on the transom.
Whilst you are at it - drill the other hole out and repeat the process - and then you will have a very good fitting stock that will pass any inspection by Dan (or others)

The bushes are used on carbon stocks and you will then be able to change them at the slightest sign of wear.

Thanks for your input. I bought one on ebay, cost me a bit but I got a tiller and extension with it, which are both too long so I can have the opportunity to cut them to exactly the right length.

I remember Mike saying a short tiller and long extension is good, but there must be a practical limit to this. Any ideas?

Mark,

As far as tiller/extension ration is concerned I reckon mine is about on the limit, I'll measure when I see the boat tomorrow night and let you know.

Don't forget you've got a bridle system so you can't get your extension through the tack without over-ruddering and there will be a limit on how long you can have it. Basically I think you want the end of the extension in your lap when you'r going upwind.

All the best,

Jon
