Topic : Who Pays???

Just wandering if there is an overall opinion on who pays for an entry fee.

The Helm
The Crew
Both pay half?

What do you do?

The Helm

In my case at any-rate it is always the Helmsman/owner ideen in siome classes crews are charging to crew!!!
However in these "Brown-oninian" unrecontstucted socialist daysd perhaps a split, of course there are and have been owner crews who pay it all too.

In my case, the owner crew, aka Dad

Get crew to buy new boat then generously pay entry fees.

Depends if crews meals are paid for by the helm too...

Depends, I guess I would think it churlish of any "Captain" not to buy his crew a meal and at least stand the first round, but times change as do our circumstances!

The term RO does have some foundation!

Times don't change that much, surely helm pays for all;entry, parking, accomadation, breakfast lunch and dinner, hair & nail appointments, tampax, phone credits and most expensive of all, cider.

That seems unfair on the helm to pay for everything, after all they get the rather dull job of sitting there and steering and playing with one sail whilst the crew gets all the important and fun things that make racing exciting
- race strategy
- race tactics
- start timings
- course management
- vitals
- rig adjustments, rake, outhaul, cunningham, kicker
- boat balance
- boat trim
- c/board trim
- spinnaker, up down etc
- jib trim
- traveller

I love this weekends crew! He's cute, fluffy and even smells nice.
He is also a functional alcoholic, so a load of fun when loaded.

My other crew is just the missus. Bah!

anyone who makes it to the Scottish event will agree that I should be paying my (ab)normal crew to not sail with me, YOU HAVE ALL BEEN WARNED

When the helm and crew get equal credit for the result, even in the last 5 years I have been to an open meeting (on the south coast) where the crews did not get a mention at the prize giving

In my day the crews always got fair shares.

i notice the trophies for crews are slightly smaller...?

I seem to recall that Alan Bond collected the Amreicas Cup and he wasn't even on board! However strict equality should be the order of the day especially in small boats where we owe so much to good crews.

But in a MR crews have more fun, so don't care about the prizes (not that I have had any recently)

As the song goes:

"So Bondy called Ben Lexon and said
I Want another yacht
Twice as big and twice as fast
as what I've already got
That'll f**k 'em"

Another NcGonagal! That just does not scan!
In fact Australia II was a small 12 Metre the big one was The Red Boat, which even had 3 certificates and they remeasured and reballasted according to the forecast. If you haven't got it "Born to Win" is an excellent book. Often to be seen in Charity Shops.

Actually it's from Kevin Bloody Wilson's "Living Next Door to Alan"

"Born to Win" is a great read. So pleased they wrenched the cup off America at last. Now if the Swiss can win it, surely anything is possible...we might see the Auld Mug come back to England in my lifetime...

Well everyone's now had their say
'bout the crew or the helm who should pay
But surely with crews
You just ply them with booze
Then shout at them all the next day.

(Well that's what my Dad did with me anyway!!)

Jon,

Did not know anyone else remembered Kevin Bloody Wilson. Whist we are on the subject of crews, what we all need is 'Mick me mate the master farter'!

I must say i have always paid the entry fee as a helm/owner and bought drinks and lunch, however party tickets is down to the individual. If i had crews lining up to sail with me maybe it would be different, but if you get a good crew you want to hold on to them!

Mags, I doubt you'll live that long! It's a very different game nowadays, as far removed from proper yotin' as space flight! Let's hope we can preserve some Corinthian Classes though with keel boat crews demanding 3000 notes a regatta I wonder how long before......................?

Having watched the defender last time trying to bail with a bucket I'm not sure about the high-tech label. Has anyone else been watching the Volvo 70s? Pure carbon racing machines, and all it has done is add technical problems to human error. We can do that as well as anyone.

What i don't understand is how this swinging keel keeps breaking pistons. I mean surely they tested these things to distruction before sending them out in to the southern ocean! How much performance do they really add? It seems to me that any boat not using one would by now be guarenteed a podium place if not have won the whole race purely by not breaking!

By: Jeremy3550
Ah but - Volvo's been bought by Ford - so tested to distruction may mean a different thing!

Fix Or Repair Daily???

I've always thought that the only thing really wrong with Fords is the makers label! They do have the advantage there's not much you can't fix with a hammer, an wrench and some ether for cold starting they were also (I think.) the last to (Sadly)abandon the starting handle!
