polaris2007_pic25.jpgChris MThat is how Dave had it before the arranegemnt above. I think he tried it because having the sheet come down in the middle of the boat meant you had to use too much rudder to get the tiller extension through the gap.

Those of us with hoops or centre strops just take it around the back.

The arrangement in the photo was quickly abandoned.

polaris2007_pic25.jpgJohn OJust noticed this old thread, interesting, but why not do what the Fireballs and Fifteens do an lead the transome yoke (?)along boom, back to a mainsheet jamer in the middle. This enables you to centre line the boom without leech tension and avoidshaving to adjust the windward transom traveller.

Or does the merlin rig need / accept sheeting the boom to windward of centre line and thus require a traveller in the midle of the boat?

sheerline_measurement.jpgTony BlackmoreMeasuring where the sheerline is, in order to calculate the mast height required:

The lower part shows the ply template I made (about 130mm long). You could cut it out of card but Ive got a couple more to do so...

The left side of the template needs to be perfectly straight to go up against the hull. The pointed part at the top is the shearline indicator on top of the deck.

The top picture shows the straight edge on top of the mast step. You measure both sides as the bar (or whatever) wont be level with the deck on each side.

The red writing on the template is from the last one I did. 112 + 106 were the shearline to bar measurements. divide by 2 = 109.

730mm - 109 = 621mm So your mast would need to be less than 621mm from the top of the lower band to the shoulder of the mast foot. The bit that sits on top of the mast step.

hounds.jpgMagsIt does not go through the foredeck to a cleat below, I can see that, so the only place it can be (if there is a cleat) is on the other side of the mast to this photo:

dizzy_490_in_1956.jpgAncient GeekEileen Ramsey is still alive aged 90+ living in Hampshire, her archive is reported as being "safe" but not researchable or readilly accesable (Probably as negatives in envelopes on boxes!)The Maritime Museum is reported as being interested in it but Museums tend to be black holes for such things. Her nephew Nick Ward has just written a book about surviving the Fastnet Gale of 79 "Left for dead", she is definitely not the romantic novalist! £4.2s extrapolated to todays prices means she was never the cheapest! x 30 = £120+! You could write to Nick Ward c/o his publisher. She was for a lot the photographer of choice whilst not as prolific as Beken perhaps more sympathetic in small boats, dinghies and yachts.10 January 2008

dizzy_490_in_1956.jpgjIlI have been trying to find some background information about Eileen Ramsay because I have a wonderful photo of my husbands boat N947 taken at Tamesis Easter 1957 and the original invoice for £4 2s including p&p! Is this the same E.Ramsay who appears to be a celebrated romantic novelist and now lives in Scotland?Interesting -----02 January 2008

traveller_controls.jpgChris MMore than you think is the answer if youre deckstepped. At a guess 6 to 8 inches.

Considerably less is necessary if youre not deckstepped as the rake is less important as you cant use as much.

traveller_controls.jpgJohnB (3404)Setting mine up at the moment and have a question.

If the mast is at the zero rake position, how far does the top of the middle block need to be off the boom to allow enough mast rake for stronger winds conditions. The mainsheet blocks allow for some movemement which is neat, the question is how much is enough !

Wondering whether my hoop needs to be shortened........

Thanks
