Please find detailed below an explanation of the various technical terms used in the description of designs in the guide:
Bilge
Draft
Forefoot That part of the hull below the waterline and extending from the stem back to the mast.
Land The bit between the sea and the sky !!!
Rise of Floor Originally and generally used to describe how much "vee" their was in the floor of a boat . However in the English restricted classes (K14, Merlin, N12) it was considered necessary to prevent the introduction of excessive vee in a search for ultra-narrow waterlines, so a minimum waterline beam measurement was specified, to be taken at mid length. To avoid having to float the boat to determine the waterline the measurement is taken a fixed distance above the keel. This measurement has come to be known as the "rise of floor" measurement. Experience has shown that a rise of floor measurement on the minimum is essential for all-round performance, and over the years many boats have initially failed to measure correctly, necessitating remedial action.
