Redditch Sailing Club sail on a small lake contained within Arrow Valley Countryside Park. The clubhouse has the usual facilities changing rooms and showers, whilst upstairs are seating areas with a bar.
The club is an RYA approved training establishment and run two training course in the autumn and spring for beginners; in addition there is a weekend course in the summer to develop early racing skills for those just starting out in racing.
The club race on Sunday mornings from 10am with an 80 minute pursuit being followed by a 1 hour handicap race starting at noon. Tuesday evenings from May to the end of August see another 80 minute pursuit race. Club members can sail anytime so long as there are two boats sailing to provide mutual safety cover.
The club welcomes any dinghy up to 15 feet and over the years the fleets have changed.
Currently Comets and Enterprise are the most popular boats sailed, Merlin Rocket, Lasers, Fireflies, GP14 and Toppers also feature on a regular basis, examples of the following classes are also found in the dinghy park: Mirror, Miracle, Laser Vago, Laser II, Graduate, Lark, Solo and 420.
There are now three Merlin’s sailed weekly with a fourth making occasional appearances. Two recent converts from other classes have definitely raised the profile of the class within the club and together we are trying hard to put an end to the myth that the class is uncomfortable, unstable, unforgiving and hard to sail.
The lake covers 27 acres and has two islands that can give you superb lifts or cause immense frustration, combined with shape of the lake (letter L) you soon learn to look for all of the little shifts.
Keen and friendly racing, regular social gatherings, a summer trip to an open meet such as Bala or Saundersfoot and a growing interest in attending class open meets sum up the activities of this family friendly club.
